Collaborations

I am interested in getting you to love history as much as I do. I have worked with a wide range of people and organizations on including history within their curricula or enhancing existing approaches to historical learning. I believe knowing about the past is a key to understanding ourselves in the present, and to creating a vision for the future. I am also interested in helping people become better writers and storytellers. Everyone has a story. I can help you tell yours.

Writers

Are you working on a story or memoir? Do you want to but have no idea where to begin? Alternatively, did you start a piece of writing full of energy and now find that you’ve hit a wall? I can help you at any stage of your project. I have published writing in many genres, helped students thrive as writers, and—as a Pushcart Prize winner (2014)—I have guest edited the Pushcart Prize anthology.

Beyond simply editing, I can help you get to the heart of your story, draw out what makes your voice unique, and get you to the finish line.

Academics

I am inspired by Toni Morrison’s call to make the marginal mainstream; this means drawing out the writing of minorities and women within the discipline of history and the humanities. If this speaks to you, I can help you find your voice.

I’ve published scholarly articles in top-tier journals and I enjoy combining sound scholarly research with real-world relevance. My article, “Cities, Time, and the Backward Glance,” inaugurated the American Historical Review’s “History Unclassified” section and I have had conferences organized around my work both in the U.S. and internationally. My work is proof that it is possible to be an academic who uses prose that is imaginative, clear, and accessible. Yours can be too.

Educators

I enjoy working with children and with those who teach them. I have worked with middle and high school teachers on developing innovative approaches to history, I’ve contributed to the All-New Britannica Kids’ Encyclopaedia, and I’ve developed history content for schools.

I also have experience with adult learning. I have developed a module on history and ethics for medical professionals at the Center for Bio-Medical Ethics and Culture (CBEC) in Karachi and I am on a constant lookout for people and organizations drawn to what the past can teach us. If this is you, contact me.
